AARP AARP States Utah Scams & Fraud

Operation Stop Scams Comes to Orem on May 6

The AARP Fraud Watch Network brings fraud-fighting efforts to consumers nationwide in “ Operation: Stop Scams” -- a month-long series of events in communities coast-to-coast, as AARP state organizations sponsor more than 150 free local events in nearly every state and the District of Columbia from Friday, April 14, through Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

Utah’s event will be in Orem on Saturday, May 6 at Mountain View High School from 9:00am—Noon in the East Parking Lot.  Consumers can bring up to ten boxes of paper documents to shred for free; shredding services will be offered by Shred-It.

Suggested items to destroy include bank account and credit card information, contracts, invoices, payroll stubs, medical records, and junk mail that can be used by identity thieves for credit card applications.   Acceptable items for shredding includes hanging file folders, spiral bound notebooks, stapled documents, paper clips, and rubber bands.   Not acceptable to destroy in Shred-It trucks includes cardboard, plastics, three ring binders, hard drives, and CDs.

Every two seconds someone’s identity is stolen; that’s why AARP is launching this Operation:  Stop Scams campaign with events around the nation.  Examples of events range from a financial forum in Louisville, KY to a “Scam Jam” in Cedar Rapids, IA to a Clinton Township, MI presentation by AARP Fraud Watch Network Ambassador Frank Abagnale.  Paper-shredding events total more than 100.  Some 250 tons of sensitive documents were destroyed during a similar AARP National “Shred Fest” in 2016.

“Many Americans clear out and discard their obsolete financial documents at the end of the tax-filing season in April.  Our shredding events in dozens of communities provide a convenient and safe way for people to destroy this sensitive paperwork,” said AARP Utah State Director Alan Ormsby.

The AARP Fraud Watch Network launched in 2013 as a free resource for people of all ages.  The website provides information about fraud and scams, prevention tips from experts, an interactive scam-tracking map, fun educational quizzes, and video presentations featuring Fraud Watch Network Ambassador Frank Abagnale.  Users may sign up for “Watchdog Alert” emails that deliver breaking scam information, or call a free helpline at 877-908-3360 to speak with volunteers trained in fraud counseling.

Mountain View High School is located at 665 West Center Street.  No electronics or hard drives will be accepted.  AARP Utah is planning additional shredding events on July 15 in Midvale and Ogden.
