ORS audit: Discontinuing revised rates would not force bankruptcy

Utility Bill Money Picture

An audit by the SC Office of Regulatory Staff released Friday, January 19, says that SCE&G would not be forced in bankruptcy if they discontinue charging customers for an abandoned nuclear project.
The audit was requested by the SC Public Service Commission during a late December, 2017 hearing on a petition by ORS to force the utility to rollback its revised rates for the V. C. Summer project.
Numerous groups including AARP SC intervened in support of the ORS petition. Customers continue to pay an 18% surcharge each month for the failed project as allowed by the Base Load Review Act.
This week the House of Representatives will take up six bills dealing with utility reform. AARP SC supports two these bills, HB 4375, dealing with repeal of the BLRA and HB4379, which would create a consumer advocate for utility rate increases.
