As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

LOS ANGELES – AARP California is proud to continue the Andrus Opportunity Award Scholarship, which honors the legacy of AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus through. Each year, the Andrus Opportunity Award Scholarship will provide $5,000 in financial assistance to a graduating senior who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to community service. The award is funded by a $50,000 grant, which will help fund the scholarships for the next ten years, ensuring lasting support for students.

In her new book, “The Second Fifty: Answers to the 7 Big Questions of Midlife and Beyond,” author Debra Whitman explores the surprising factors that determine life expectancy, revealing that those who view aging positively live 7.5 years longer than those with negative attitudes.
