LOS ANGELES – AARP California is proud to continue the Andrus Opportunity Award Scholarship, which honors the legacy of AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus through. Each year, the Andrus Opportunity Award Scholarship will provide $5,000 in financial assistance to a graduating senior who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to community service. The award is funded by a $50,000 grant, which will help fund the scholarships for the next ten years, ensuring lasting support for students.

The arrears reduction program will provide $250 million in immediate relief to ratepayers behind on their bills that are enrolled in their utility’s energy assistance program.AARP New York and the Public Utility Law Project (“PULP”) today applauded the creation of an arrears reduction program to help New Yorkers behind on their energy bills. The order from the New York State Public Service Commission follows a budget allocation by Governor Hochul and the State Legislature of $250 million to pay down residential electric and gas utility arrears statewide, including on Long Island. Funds will be dispersed no later than August 1, 2022.
Since 2018, AARP Montana has offered a yearly essay contest scholarship, which celebrates tribal elders. AARP Montana has partnered with tribal colleges across the state to offer the "Honor Your Elders" scholarships. The students with the winning essay receive $1,000 to be used toward tuition and/or books for the academic year.
AARP Oklahoma and additional parties signed a settlement agreement today which includes no utility rate increase and no increase to fixed monthly customer charges for Oklahoma Gas & Electric’s (OG&E) customers. The filed settlement agreement also rejects OG&E’s request for annual rate adjustments and provides additional assistance for low-income OG&E customers.
