AARP Pennsylvania State Director Bill Johnston-Walsh provided the following statement today in response to the finalized budget for fiscal year 2025-2026.

There is a mix of perennials and shrubs that should not be pruned before winter. Keep in mind that any pruning on a plant encourages growth. Pruning stimulates a growth hormone called an auxin. If you prune the top of a rose cane, it will stimulate growth below the pruned section. Pruning in late fall or winter is risky. The environmental temperatures will not support growth.
AARP Mississippi will present a virtual event about “Aging and Mental Health” at 11 a.m. on May 11, 2022. Even before the pandemic, many older people felt the impact of social isolation. Many of us have learned that we all struggle during challenging times. This event is being offered in observance of Mental Health Awareness Month.
Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and any app that lets you connect (chat) with people can provide a convenient way to interact with others. It is important to remember that scammers also commonly use these platforms to find victims. Scammers often create fake profiles and pretend to either be someone you know, someone you want to know or an entity you trust. Because there are fake profiles it is difficult to know who you can trust on social media sites. The following are some red flags that you might be targeted by a scammer on Facebook or another social media platform:
One third of U.S. adults say they have been targeted by scams seeking payment by gift card, according to a report by the AARP Fraud Watch Network. And nearly a quarter of consumers have given or received gift cards that had no funds on them.

Campaigns and the Office of Volunteer Engagement have been piloting a way for advocacy volunteers to promote social media content more efficiently. Using the Bambu online platform, volunteers can post to Twitter and Facebook with just one click!

Transportation Organization Wins $5,000 Award from Commonwealth Council on Aging
Rosalinda Martinez of Houston, TX has been named Director of Community Strategy for the nationwide nonprofit’s Texas operations. Rosalinda previously served as Associate State Director of Outreach and Advocacy for the Houston team. Rosalinda has been with the AARP Texas team for 2.5 years, during which time she has led Hispanic/Latino outreach efforts, caregiver support programming, and developed new opportunities for volunteer leadership in Houston. In her new role, Martinez will lead a team of four staff and hundreds of volunteers in Austin and Houston.
