'Lift Every Voice' in Symphony Concert

JAZZ

Hearing live music can be one of life’s most enjoyable and enriching experiences. It’s even better at a discount.

On Friday, Feb. 12, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra presents “Lift Every Voice,” its annual celebration of Black History Month. AARP in St. Louis will offer a two-for-one discount to the first 100 members who order tickets for the 7:30 p.m. performance at Powell Hall.

The orchestra, which has won seven Grammy Awards, will join forces with its 120-voice In Unison Chorus, launched in 1994 to celebrate and perform African American music. This performance will feature spirituals and classical compositions. It will be led, as in years past, by Kevin McBeth, director of music and worship at Manchester United Methodist Church.

McBeth has said his favorite selection is Lift Every Voice and Sing, sometimes known as the black national anthem, because of the rousing arrangement written for In Unison.

This year’s special guest is Larnelle Harris, a five-time Grammy winner and Gospel Hall of Fame inductee.
