Silver Spring and Columbia, Maryland are among the nation’s best places to live and age, according to the newly released 2018 “ AARP Livability Index.” Developed by the AARP Public Policy Institute, the index assists community leaders, local policy makers and residents with identifying areas of priority for community development.

More communities are enacting policies to improve livability with notable increases in housing trust funds that set aside revenue for a variety of affordable housing strategies—now in over 200 counties. Along with overall livability trends, AARP identifies the top ten large, mid-size and small cities.

Despite continued suburban sprawl, communities across the nation are taking steps to become better places to live and age in, according to data analyzed from the newly updated AARP Livability Index. More communities are enacting policies to improve livability with notable increases in housing trust funds that set aside revenue for a variety of affordable housing strategies—now in over 200 counties. Along with overall livability trends, AARP identifies the top ten large, mid-size and small cities.

AARP Michigan is hosting a forum in East Lansing on Wednesday, Oct. 18, to discuss how communities are addressing residents’ current and future needs.

On Thursday evening, Nov. 17, AARP Texas will host a public forum in Austin featuring local and national experts discussing strategies for Texas communities to become even more accessible, comfortable and safe for people of all ages.
Livable Drawing
An estimated 2 million people 65 and older will live in Chicago, Cook County and six surrounding counties by 2030. The Lifetime Livable Communities Collaborative, a group of Chicago-area nonprofit organizations convened by AARP Illinois, aims to steer public policy to address the needs of this growing segment of the population.

CARY – A growing population of older adults in Wake County and other counties across the state are putting new priorities on infrastructure and public spending. When it comes to making cities more age-friendly, sidewalks play a critical role.
