The American Red Cross is seeking people to volunteer their time and help save lives at the Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events beginning September 23 through October 14. Most events are Saturday morning from 8:30-12:30, there are 19 different events across Colorado. Sound the Alarm in Colorado is part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires. BAH is a non-profit membership organization modeled on the many successful villages now operating across the country that empower older adults to stay active and engaged while living in their own homes and neighborhoods. It is a program of the Whatcom Council on Aging.
It is hard to believe that just a few weeks ago we were facing the worst flooding this state has ever seen. The state office reacted quickly, establishing contact with FEMA to see what we could do to support their efforts and inform our membership of relief services to those impacted and volunteer opportunities for those who want to assist. AARP also made a generous donation of $25,000.00 to the Red Cross to help with flood relief efforts. Although time has passed, clean up activities from an event like this takes a great deal of time, and the uncertainty can cause physical and emotional duress. There are some resources still at your disposal about which we wanted to make sure you were aware: Here are some groups highlighted by the Denver Post which are assisting flood victims:
In response to the overwhelming devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy, AARP Foundation established the AARP Foundation Relief Fund and is giving nearly $1.3 million to select organizations working to support victims and communities impacted by the storm, including organizations dedicated to serving older adults. Donations were given nationally to the American Red Cross and locally to organizations in these seven states: Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Rhode Island.
