Are you interested in taking a class just for the fun of learning something new? Do you want to learn how to make iMovies or discover how to savor French wine? How about studying opera or debating civil rights issues? The Osher Institute Lifelong Learning Institute can make it happen. Started in 2004 with a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at The University of Utah provides opportunities for intellectually stimulating, affordable, non-credit learning and meaningful social engagement to people 50 and older. The Osher Institute at the U is part of a network of over 100 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at colleges and universities across the country.

AARP Utah is proud that one of the experts presenting a course for the Winter 2015 semester is our own State Director Alan Ormsby. The course description is as follows:

Experts estimate that between 30% to 40% of all health care costs can be attributed to waste, fraud, and abuse. In a 2.9 trillion dollar-per-year health system, mitigating fraud and waste could save hundreds of billions of dollars per year and improve health outcomes. This course will explore America's health system, analyze the difference between public and private payer systems, identify fraud, waste and abuse, and examine possible solutions for the problems.

AARP is dedicated to the notion that everyone should have access to affordable, quality health care, so this course will identify the barriers in our current system to widespread access and possible remedies to extending coverage to a greater number of Utahns.

It only costs $30 to join the Osher Institute, though courses do require tuition payments and sometimes special fees to pay for materials used during the classes. You can register online by going to www.osher.utah.edu, or call 801-585-5442.

Most classes are held at the Commander’s House at Fort Douglas on the University of Utah’s campus. The winter session begins in the fourth week of January and runs for six weeks, with classes meeting once a week.  Instructors are distinguished emeritus faculty, scholars, and experts from the community who share a passion for teaching and appreciation for the enthusium older students bring to the classroom.
