Frank Abagnale Joins Forces with AARP to Fight Identity Theft

Frank Abagnale
Sadoti, Alexis (TMP)

Who is Frank Abagnale?  He's the real-life person who was featured in the 2002 film "Catch Me if You Can" starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks--a con artist who successfully posed as an airline pilot, doctor, and lawyer and in the process cashed millions of dollars in fraudulent checks.  He was caught and served prison time, but upon release agreed to work with the FBI to assist in identity theft and other fraud cases.  He's worked with them for decades now, and also advises corporations, financial institutions, and government agencies around the world about how to stop this billion dollar industry.

He has now become an ambassador with the AARP Fraud Watch Network to alert the public about identity theft and cybercrimes, and hosts a lively online quiz on how to identity theft--click  here to take it!

Why is AARP so concerned with identity theft?  Every two seconds, someone's identity is stolen.  Last year, over 13 million Americans were victims of identity theft, which together with investment fraud and other scams cost $18 billion last year.

Abagnale will participate in AARP-sponsored identity theft forums across the country to help consumers know how to spot and avoid fraud.  To get the latest alerts about scams in Utah or to warn others of a suspected scam, go to the AARP Fraud Watch Network's website.  In addition to a scam-tracking map featuring warnings from law enforcement and people in the state about what to watch out for, you can have access to the Con Artists Playbook, a handbook of interviews from con artists who reveal how they steal your money.  The website provides resources and tools free of charge to anyone of any age about how to protect yourself from fraud, identity theft, and scams.
