AARP members are invited to a special live telephone town hall meeting with Governor Jay Inslee on Tuesday, February 16. We will talk about the state legislative session and a series of initiatives to help ensure that people age with dignity and purpose including long term care, Medicaid expansion, the Alzheimer’s state plan and caregiving. After the Governor, two legislators will talk about the CARE Act, a bill to support family caregivers.

This January, a cast of new Senators and Representatives will descend on Olympia into a sea of policy and budget challenges. Before they get too distracted, let’s make sure they take note and recognize the Age Wave that is affecting our state.
Over 4 million people in California are assisting their loved ones so they can stay at home. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility, but are often unaware of the critical resources and support available to them. We can take some common sense steps to change that. That is why AARP is sponsoring the California Caregiver Act (AB 1744). This bill would create a Task Force responsible for identifying policies, resources and programs, as well as service gaps, and would provide much-needed support for caregivers juggling work and other family responsibilities.
California ranks 9 th overall when it comes to meeting the long-term care needs of older residents, but AARP warns much more must be done, at an accelerated pace, to improve the state’s health care system around prevention & treatment, affordability & access in Adult Day Resource Center functions, nursing home costs/quality-of-life, quality-of-care in the LTSS system, and support for family caregivers.
