AARP to Recognize Volunteers at Special Free Concert featuring Jack Gladstone 

Volunteers who work to improve communities across Montana will be treated to a concert and appreciation event as a special 'thank you' for their contributions.

The “Heart of Montana” event will feature a free concert by “Montana’s Troubadour” Jack Gladstone on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the Myrna Loy Center in Helena. Immediately before the concert is a volunteer appreciation appetizer reception. While the concert is free and open to the public, space is limited so registration is required.

The concert is held in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, 2018. This annual event celebrates volunteers and the power of people working together to build stronger communities.

“National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 and is an opportunity to recognize the people who make our communities strong,” said Tim Summers, AARP Montana State Director. “Individuals find unique ways to lend their time, talent and voice to causes they care about – and their stories inspire others to take action. Through volunteerism, we discover the power to unite in making a difference – we are thrilled to honor all Montana volunteers with this special ‘Heart of Montana’ concert.  Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.”

Jack Gladstone is one of America’s premier storytellers.  A member of the Blackfeet Nation, Jack illustrates American Indian culture through an elegant mosaic of music, lyric poetry, and spoken narrative.

A former college professor, Jack co-founded Glacier National Park’s world-renowned lecture series, “Native America Speaks.” This program, established in 1985, is the longest continuously running indigenous speaker series in Park Service history. Jack has created fifteen critically acclaimed CDs. His latest release, “Native Anthropology,” garnered the prestigious “Best Historical Recording” from the Native American Music Association.

In 2013, Jack became the first Montanan to receive the C.M. Russell Heritage Award, given to honor his unique contribution to the “legacy, culture, and life of the American West.”  In 2014, Jack Gladstone and Friends won an Emmy for his performance on Montana PBS, 11th and Grant with Eric Funk. In 2015, Jack was honored by the State of Montana with a Governor’s Humanities Award. In 2016, Jack garnered the prestigious "Jennifer Easton Community Spirit Award" from the First People's Fund as well as the Governor's Art Award.

“As inspiration for the theme of this special volunteer recognition event, we selected the title of one of Jack’s songs – Heart of Montana,” said Summers.  “Volunteers are indeed the ‘heart of Montana’ -- working in their communities and making a difference where people live.  We are pleased to provide this free concert and we are grateful to have Jack’s help to honor to all the wonderful volunteers across the state.”
