This year marks the 90th anniversary of Social Security – a cornerstone of financial security in America. As part of AARP Hawai`i’s effort to honor the milestone and our efforts to protect and strengthen Social Security, we’re holding a Telephone Town Hall with U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono.
The telephone forum will be on Saturday, May 31 at 9 a.m. Those who have participated in Telephone Town Halls before will get a call to join the forum. Others can call in toll-free at 1-833-305-0175 when the Telephone Town Hall begins or watch a Facebook Live simulcast or recording of the event on the AARP Hawai`i Facebook page. For more information go to aarp.org/local or click on the events tab of the AARP Hawai`i Facebook page.
“Social Security is arguably the most successful government initiative in history,” said Keali`i Lopez, AARP Hawai`i State Director. “We’re grateful to U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono for agreeing to be on our Telephone Town Hall and answer questions from listeners about what’s happening in Congress to strengthen the program and protect its future.
“More than one in five Hawai`i residents – 296,605 people receive Social Security payments. The program brings $6.2 billion into Hawai`i’s economy and lifts 49,000 kupuna 65 and older out of poverty,” Lopez continued. “Social Security is still doing what it was built to do and AARP will do all it can to make sure that it is there for the next 90 years.”
