Family Caregiver Resources for Hawai`i

No matter where you are in your caregiving journey — starting to plan; taking care of a family member in your home, in a facility, or from a distance; or managing end-of-life caregiving responsibilities — having resources at your fingertips will make the process easier.

AARP developed this family caregiver guide with you, the caregiver, in mind and as a starting point to help you find the services and support you might need throughout your journey.

Caregiver Support

Aging and Disability Resource Centers (808-643-2372)
Helps older adults, individuals with disabilities and family caregivers find options for long-term support and services. Run by the Area Agency on Aging for each island, it provides a one-stop shop for information about aging.

Child and Family Service (808-681-3500)
Statewide services include caregiver respite, resources and support for family members caring for older loved ones with health issues.

Finances

Catholic Charities Hawai‘i (808-521-4357)
Assists with emergency financial assistance grants and housing needs; networks with other agencies to provide material assistance (clothing, utilities, food); helps complete applications for public benefits.

CSI Trust Company (808-538-0353)
Provides daily money management, trust and fiduciary services to Hawai‘i’s most fragile and vulnerable residents who do not qualify for public assistance with their financial affairs.

The Caregiver Foundation (808-625-3782)
Services include caregiver coordination, daily money management, family caregiving planning, trusteeship, home organization, home cleaning and guardianship for individuals who can no longer manage their day-to-day affairs and decisions.


Legal

Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i (O‘ahu: 808-536-4302; Neighbor islands: 800-499-4302)
Assists low- and moderate-income communities with civil legal matters.

University of Hawai‘i Elder Law Program (808-956-6544)
Provides help with advance health care directives, simple wills, power of attorney agreements, basic information about planning for incapacity, and public benefits and counseling related to elder abuse, caregiving and guardianship and conservatorship.

Volunteer Legal Services Hawai‘i
Offers free or reduced-cost services for low- and moderate-income community members. O‘ahu: 808-528-7046; Hawai‘i Island: 808-313-8210; Kaua‘i: 808-698-8210; Maui: 808-727-8210

Health

Adult Day Health Centers, Department of Health, Office of Health Care Assurance (808-692-7420)
Statewide listing of licensed adult day care and day health centers for older adults that provide respite services and supervised care during the day.

Alzheimer’s Association, Hawai‘i Office (800-272-3900 | O‘ahu: 808-591-2771)
Supports people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, including caregiver training and support groups.

American Diabetes Association, Hawai‘i Chapter (808-947-5979)
Provides resources about all types of diabetes as well as information for caregivers and others affected indirectly by the disease.

Med-QUEST Division, Department of Human Services (O‘ahu: 808-524-3370; Neighbor islands: 800-316-8005)
Administers health care benefits for older adults and blind and disabled people who are Medicaid-eligible beneficiaries.

State Health Insurance Assistance Program (O‘ahu: 808-586-7299; Neighbor islands: 888-875-9229)
Provides free health insurance information and counseling to people with Medicare. Trained volunteers can answer questions about Medicare parts A, B, C and D.

Housing and Care Facilities

Catholic Charities Hawai‘i (808-521-4357)
Provides adults age 60 and older with counseling on affordable housing options, and affordable shared housing, and resources for older adults able to do their own housing search.

Hawaii Department of Health, Office Healthcare Assurance (808-692-7400)
Lists licensed adult residential care homes (ARCH), expanded ARCH and community care foster family homes that provide shelter, supervision and care for people needing help with daily living activities.

Home Sharing Hawaii (808-308-5291)
Matches individuals on Oahu seeking a home with people who have a home to share.

Hawai‘i Public Housing Authority (808-832-4692)
Assists Hawai‘i residents with affordable rental and supportive housing and public housing.

Project Dana (808-945-3736)
Faith in Action volunteer program provides home-and-community- based services including telephone visits, light housekeeping and fall prevention education to frail, disabled and older adults. Offers a Caregiving for the Caregiver training and support program for family caregivers of kupuna.

Information and Services

Assistive Technology Resource Centers of Hawaii (808-532-7110)
Connects people with disabilities, including those related to aging, to technology resources and training that can enable independence and participation in all aspects of community life.

Catholic Charities, Hawai‘i (808-521-4357)
Offers Oahu transportation or van service for older adults to and from group dining sites, shopping, medical appointments, entitlement agencies and excursions.

Hele-On Bus (Hawaii County) (808-961-8408)
Provides fixed-route bus service.

Hawaii County Elderly Activities Division (East Hawaii: 808-961-8311; West Hawaii: 808-327-3560)
Oversees five programs: Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Coordinated Services for the Elderly, Hawai‘i County Nutrition Program and Elderly Recreation Services/ Special Programs. Services include transportation, escort, information and assistance, in-home services (chores, personal care), congregate and home-delivered meals, recreation, and more.

Hele-On Kako‘o Paratransit Service (Hawaii County) (808-961-8744)
Provides transportation for those who are unable to use the fixed route bus service due to a disability.

Kaua‘i Bus and Paratransit (808-246-8110)
Local public bus transportation service. Paratransit services are available for qualified individuals.

Maui Economic Opportunity Transportation Services (808-877-7651)
Provides low-cost, specialized transportation for older adults and people with disabilities.

Project Dana (808-945-3736)
Volunteer drivers on O‘ahu provide transportation for medical appointments.

TheHandi-Van (Honolulu) (808-538-0033)
Public transit service for people with disabilities who are unable to use the city’s bus service, TheBus.

Veterans Affairs Pacific Islands Health Care System (808-538-0033)
Provides a variety of services and programs to help veterans and their caregivers. Hawai‘i Caregiver Support Coordinator: 800-214-1306

Compassion and Choices
Offers planning tools and advance planning consultation services related to end-of-life options, including access to medical aid in dying.

Provides information about medical aid in dying.

Community resource provides information on advance care planning as well as hospice and palliative care.
