Have Fun and Challenge Your Brain at the Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee

Think you’re a good speller? Maybe even a great speller?

Have fun and challenge your mind to keep it healthy. Enter this year’s Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee.

Go to kupunaspellingbee.com to learn more and register. The number of registrants is limited. Cost is $35. The top prize is round trip tickets for two people to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies and a four-night stay at the California Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Statewide preliminary competitions run from Aug. 16 to Sept. 6. The top two finishers from each preliminary round will compete in the final round on Sept. 20 at Hale Pulama Mau at the Kuakini Medical Center.

Last year’s champion, 75-year-old Nick Dreher of Honolulu, spelled the word “cavatina” correctly to win.

Below are the dates, time and location of the preliminary rounds:

Honolulu: Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. at Maryknoll High School
Kaneohe: Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. at Windward Community College
Aiea: Aug. 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the Aiea Public Library

Hilo: Aug. 23 at 9 a.m. at Hawai`i Island Adult Care
Kona: Aug. 23 at 9 a.m. at The Salvation Army

Lihue: Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School

Wailuku: Sept. 6 at the Wailuku Hongwanji Mission
