A retirement that enables you to choose how you live as you age requires planning and a lot of thought.

That’s why AARP Hawai‘i is offering a “Think of Your Future” workshops on Oahu and Maui. Because before you stop working, you need to think about when to take Social Security, how to pay for health insurance and how to budget for your living and enjoying life expenses.

Topics that will be presented at the events include:

>> Secure Your Financial Future (Oahu). Review the different ways to save, invest and manage your money. An important part of securing your future includes figuring out how much money you’ll need to live a comfortable and healthy life style as you grow older.

>> 10 Steps to Get Ready for Retirement (Maui) – Many pre-retirees overlook the rising cost of medical care. According to estimates, the savings needed to cover most health care expenses in retirement, including premiums, is $116,000 for men and $131,000 for women.

>> Medicare 101 . When you become eligible, you only have a seven-month window to sign up for Medicare, and it actually starts three months just before you turn 65. If you don’t sign up or are not covered a spouse’s employer, it can delay medical coverage and trigger unwanted penalties.

>> Social Security.  The decision on when to claim Social Security depends on your circumstances. However, people who claim the retirement benefit at age 62, will get likely get 76 percent less money than if you wait to claim Social Security at age 70.
