AARP Indiana celebrates a momentous Indy summer

With much of the summer in the rearview mirror, AARP Indiana is reflecting upon a productive season in Indianapolis.

It is marked by a victory for transit and mobility and a ton of fun with local partners.

“Summer 2019 saw one of our biggest victories come to fruition,” said Mandla Moyo, AARP Indiana community engagement director, “And we were also able to see continued affirmation of our commitment to our community partners in helping make life better for people that are 50 plus.”

50 Plus Ride the Bus

IndyGo’s Red Line launched on September 1, bringing a new level of access to transportation for Indianapolis residents. This new bus rapid transit line dramatically increases the frequency of public transportation, and it marks a major quality of life improvement for older residents.

“It’s especially important for the older residents of our city,” AARP Indiana State Director Sarah Waddle said at the Red Line’s grand opening celebration and dedication. “It marks a moment where older Indianapolis residents have more mobility options.

“A moment that helps ensure that whatever their choice in destination, it is not dictated by their ability or desire to drive a car.”

Full Steam Ahead

Beyond the monumental victory that is the Red Line launch, AARP Indiana recommitted to its partners in the Indianapolis community.

The summer was packed with events throughout the city, and AARP Indiana was there, side by side with the Indianapolis community.

Teaming up with the Indianapolis Indians, staff and volunteers offered members a night out at the ballpark.

It wasn’t a stretch to attend Monumental Yoga, an iconic event in downtown Indianapolis.

We teamed up with Joy’s House in the Broad Ripple neighborhood to offer a little bit of respite to caregivers.

And AARP Indiana, a long-standing partner, showed up big at the INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair as part of the Indiana Black Expo.

Staff even had a chance to rub shoulders with Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg as he made his way through the expo hall.
