Indianapolis, Ind. – Mattie Perry-Lightfoot has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2023 AARP Indiana Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.
AARP Indiana selected Perry-Lightfoot for her remarkable service, which has greatly benefited Gary and Northwest Indiana, reflected AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers.
“Mattie does an incredible job leading one of our most active volunteer teams,” Emily Gorman, AARP Indiana director of outreach, said. “She cares so much and is a true servant leader.”
Perry-Lightfoot has served on the organization’s volunteer Executive Council for nearly six years, representing AARP Indiana’s Gary volunteer team. She is a critical partner that helps identify ways the team can make an impact and passionately serves by empowering older Hoosiers to choose how they want to live as they age.
The award was formally presented to Perry-Lightfoot at a ceremony earlier this month.
“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” AARP Indiana State Director Sarah Waddle said. “AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve.”
Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
