AARP’s Team Gary supports the Foodbank of Northwest Indiana

As recently as 2021, about 10 percent of U.S. households were food insecure at one point during the calendar year or another.

Older people are not immune to the issue, and many wonder where their next meal may come from.

“AARP Indiana’s volunteers and staff across the state have passionately worked to address food insecurity in our communities for years,” Emily Gorman, AARP Indiana director of outreach, said. “We’re proud to support organizations who make it their purpose to make sure no one goes hungry.”

This May, AARP Indiana’s Team Gary sponsored the Foodbank of Northwest Indiana’s recent fundraiser, The Soirée, which supports hunger relief efforts in Lake & Porter counties.

According to a report from the Times of Northwest Indiana, the Foodbank serves approximately 1,700 seniors.

The event also recognized Congressman Frank Mrvan for his advocacy efforts focused on hunger relief.

Team Gary was on hand for the at-capacity event.

“The cost of basics like utilities, groceries, and more continue to go up,” Gorman said. “Food security will  continue to be a priority and unifying call to action for AARP Indiana and our volunteers.”
