Older Hoosiers can help shape new energy rebate program

As utility costs across the state continue to rise, many older Hoosiers are looking to stretch their limited income as far as possible. A new energy rebate program could help them do that and the State of Indiana is seeking public input.

The Indiana Office of Energy Developments (OED) wants to hear from residents about a federally funded home energy rebate program available in late 2024. The programs are:

• Home Efficiency Rebate Program (HOMES)
  
  • Eligibility: All Hoosiers, including single-family and multi-family residential units
  • Upgrades: Whole-home retrofits include air sealing, insulation, and heat pump installations.
• Home Appliance Rebate Program (HEAR)
  
  • Eligibility: Low- and moderate-income households earning less than 150% of Area Median Income.
  • Upgrades: High-efficiency equipment like heat pumps, energy-efficient stoves, and necessary electrical upgrades.

“Most Hoosiers want to stay in their homes and communities as long as possible,” AARP Indiana State Director Sarah Waddle said. “Energy-related costs can make it difficult for older Hoosiers to choose how they live as they age.

“Opportunities that could lower monthly utility bills and improve financial security should be thoughtfully considered.”

Members of the public can submit comments on the program’s comprehensive planning, design, and implementation process at upcoming public meetings across the state.

Registration is not required but encouraged.
