For 90 years, Social Security has been a promise kept to generations of hardworking Americans. This summer, AARP is joining with communities across the country to celebrate that legacy, while rallying public support to protect its future.

AARP Maryland will host a community breakfast on August 14, the 90th Anniversary of President Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act, at the Dough Roller, 4103 Coastal Highway, from 8 to 10 a.m.

“For nine decades, Social Security has delivered the earned payments that help 1.1 million Marylanders stay financially secure,” said Hank Greenberg, AARP Maryland State Director. “We’re proud to honor that legacy, while also calling attention to the importance of strengthening and protecting Social Security for generations to come. After all, it’s our money. We earned it.”

Event highlights include:

  • Remarks from Maryland Secretary of Aging Carmel Roques, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan, and Delegate Wayne Hartman.
  • Presentation of a signed proclamation from Governor Wes Moore.
  • Greetings from the office of the Comptroller of Maryland and the Office of Senator Chris Van Hollen.
  • Update on AARP’s work to protect and defend Social Security for today and future generations.
  • Story-sharing opportunities where attendees can reflect on what Social Security means to them.
  • On-site tools for attendees to take action and learn more about Social Security advocacy.
  • Digital seaboards along the coast of Ocean City, sharing the importance of Social Security.
  • Breakfast buffet for AARP Maryland members and their guests (registration required).

This event is part of a nationwide effort to engage AARP members, elected officials, and local communities in a conversation about the role Social Security has played—and must continue to play—in helping secure the financial futures of Americans of all ages.

“Social Security isn’t just a retirement plan—it’s a promise to every American who pays into it,” said Tony Trenkle, a retired federal executive and current member of the AARP Maryland Executive Council. “We’ll celebrate its success and stand together in protecting it.”
