AARP Maryland Congratulates 2016 General Election Winners

State director calls on new leadership to address Social Security, Medicare and Caregiving

Maryland— AARP Maryland State Director Hank Greenberg issued the following statement regarding the outcome of the 2016 General Election in Maryland:

“AARP Maryland congratulates the winners of the 2016 contests for the US Senate and House of Representatives.  As AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins said yesterday, ‘ Now the real work begins.’ AARP Maryland stands ready to work with the State’s elected leaders to improve the lives of Marylanders of every generation.”

AARP extends best wishes to the following members of the incoming Maryland Congressional Delegation voted into office on November 8:

• U.S. Senator-elect and current U. S. House Representative Chris Van Hollen.
• U. S. House Representatives: Andy Harris (District 1), Dutch Ruppersberger (District 2), John Sarbanes (District 3), Anthony Brown (District 4), Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (District 5), John Delaney (District 6), Elijah Cummings (District 7), Jamie Raskin (District 8)
• The Senior Senator from Maryland, Benjamin L. Cardin, was not up for re-election this year

Greenberg urged Congressional leaders of all political backgrounds to work together on issues important to Marylanders 50-plus and their families, including:

• Social Security: Congress and the Administration should find a bipartisan solution to make Social Security financially sound and adequate for future generations.
• Medicare: Washington should improve Medicare and keep it strong by finding ways to reduce high prescription drug costs, improve health care outcomes, and eliminate waste and fraud.
• Caregiving: The federal and state governments should take action to support America’s 40 million family caregivers—including 771,000 in Maryland—who help make it possible for older parents, spouses, children and adults with disabilities and other loved ones to live independently at home in their communities, where they want to be.
