AARP Maryland is proud to announce the appointment of Sara M. Westrick as its new Director of Advocacy. Ms. Westrick will lead AARP Maryland’s legislative strategy, working closely with volunteers, legislators, and community partners to champion issues that matter most to older adults—from caregiving and health care to financial security and livable communities.
Ms. Westrick brings more than two decades of experience in public policy, strategic communications, and civic engagement to the role. She has built a distinguished career influencing policy at the federal, state, and local levels, with a focus on public health, humanitarian affairs, aging populations, and community resilience. Her leadership has spanned roles at USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Anne Arundel County Commission for Women, where she served as Chair.
“Sara’s deep commitment to public service and her ability to build inclusive, cross-sector coalitions make her an ideal leader for our advocacy efforts,” said Hank Greenberg, AARP Maryland state director. “Her strategic vision and passion for empowering communities will help us advance policies that support older Marylanders and their families.”
“I’m honored to join AARP Maryland at such a pivotal time,” said Ms. Westrick. “Advocacy is about listening, lifting voices, and driving change that reflects the needs of our communities. I look forward to working alongside our volunteers and partners to make Maryland a better place for people of all ages.”
Ms. Westrick holds a master’s degree in international political economy from Universidad de Belgrano in Argentina and a bachelor’s degree in international relations and modern languages from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. She is fluent in Spanish and conversational in French, Portuguese, and Italian. She is also a Jeopardy champion from Season 23.
