Stretch Your Dollars with AARP's 99 Great Ways to Save

Cropped Hand Putting Money Into Piggy Bank By Coins Stack On Table

AARP recently released a new edition of their annual "99 Great Ways to Save," a comprehensive guide designed to help you make the most of your money.

The guide offers advice on how to take advantage of discounts, shop strategically during seasonal sales, reduce wasteful spending habits, negotiate prices, use cashback apps and find deals on prescription medications and insurance.

AARP knows saving money is more important than ever for many Americans as we experience inflation, higher interest rates and general economic turbulence.

Here are some of the highlights from this year's edition:

  • Many grocery stores offer discounts on specific days for seniors. Ask at the customer service counter.
  • Store-brand products often match or exceed the quality of name brands at a lower price. Supermarkets also place pricier items at eye level; look high and low for better deals.
  • Keep tires inflated and avoid rapid acceleration to improve fuel efficiency and save on high gas prices. Additionally, use apps like GasBuddy to find the cheapest gas nearby.
  • Smart thermostats can cut heating and cooling costs by learning your schedule.
  • Switching to LEDs can save significantly on electricity over time. Electronics also draw power even when off, so use power strips to easily reduce electricity use.
  • AARP members get exclusive deals on hotels, car rentals and vacation packages, especially during colder seasons.
  • Always ask your doctor or pharmacist if a generic version of your medication is available. AARP and other organizations offer cards that can reduce drug costs.
  • Many Medicare Advantage plans include free gym memberships through programs like SilverSneakers.

Don't let this list of highlights stop you from reading our full "99 Great Ways to Save" article here. Happy saving!
