Black History Month Town Hall in Detroit Explores Financial Security on April 24

The last in a series of AARP Black History Month National Town Halls exploring issues of importance to the African American community will come to Detroit on April 24.

The free public event – to be held at Wayne State University’s Eugene Applebaum College Auditorium, 259 Mack Ave., Detroit, from 6 to 9 p.m. – will examine financial security issues during Money Smart Week, the week of April 23rd. There will be a reception from 5-6 p.m.

The gathering also will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, observe the 50th anniversary of his assassination, and reflect on the pivotal year 1968: “50 Years: 1968-2018. What’s Next?”

Keynote speaker will be Lisa Mesa, Enterprise Relationship Manager, LinkedIn and CEO, Fancyfied, LLC. Mesa will highlight building a personal brand as a financial security tool.

Part of the focus of the town hall will be on the importance of achieving and maintaining personal long-term financial security and resilience at every stage of one’s life.

The evening will feature interactive breakout sessions led by panels of local financial experts. The sessions will be:

  • Men and Their Money. Moderator will be Michael Daniels, financial adviser at Ameriprise Financial Services Inc. (retired). Panelists will be David Watkins of Level One Bank, Financial Planner Aubrey Lee and Dr. Truman Hudson, professor and social economist.
  • Woman: What’s In Your Wallet? Gail Perry Mason, author and financial consultant, will moderate. Panelists will be Juliana Perry of Fifth Third Bank; Cheryl Hudson, owner of Woodhouse Day Spa; and Gina G. Hutchins, financial planner, GHG Financial Planning.
  • Millennials: Making Moves and Money. Camille Walker Banks, executive director, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Businesses will moderate. Panelists will be Sam Cannonier, PNC Bank; Armond R. Harris, co-owner, Jabs Gym – Eastern Market; and Elizabeth Mays, president and CEO, MCS Multimedia.

 

 The Detroit event will close out the AARP Black History Month Town Hall series, which also has traveled to Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and New Orleans.
