Ernestine Shepherd, a phenomenal 79-year-old body builder and world record holder, will lead AARP Michigan’s inaugural “Walk of Ages” event on the campus of Michigan State University on Friday, April 15.
The day’s activities, expected to draw hundreds, will begin at the Kellogg Center at 11 a.m. with a program focused on health, self and wealth. There will be a panel discussion and question-and-answer session on a variety of topics including nutrition, brain health, financial security and exercise.
Sheri Jones, news anchor for WLNS-TV, will emcee the event. Panelists include: Toni Thomas, health and fitness coach, East Lansing; Whitney Anderson-Harrell, MSU Federal Credit Union; and Dr. Christopher Abood, Lansing Neurosurgery.
Dr. Marcy Street, surgeon and dermatologist of Doctor’s Approach, will discuss skin health. Playmakers will conduct a Good Form Walking course. Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero will deliver opening remarks.
Shepherd – who is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest female body builder and has been featured in print media and on television shows Including the Oprah Winfrey Show – will close the session with an inspirational message about the community benefits of walking and talking.
A three-mile walk along the Red Cedar River led by Shepherd will begin at 1:15 p.m. People of all ages are invited to participate. Players from the MSU men’s and women’s basketball teams will serve as marshals on the river walk.
The media is invited to attend the events. Ernestine Shepherd will be available for interviews after 3 p.m. Thursday, April 14 and before 10 a.m. on Friday, April 15.
“Walk of Ages” is hosted by AARP Michigan in collaboration with the MSU Federal Credit Union, MSU Recreational Sports and Fitness Services, Doctor’s Approach and Playmakers.
