Telehealth bill wins passage in Michigan

Telehealth gained a foothold in Michigan during the lame duck session of the Legislature.

A bill that defines telehealth in statute and ensures that safeguards are in place for patients’ safety and privacy won unanimous passage in the House on Dec. 1 and in the Senate on Dec. 6. Senate Bill 753 is headed to the governor’s office for his signature.

Due to technological advances, the use of electronic information systems and telecommunications in the delivery of health care is becoming increasingly common. These technologies allow opportunities for health care providers to conduct office visits remotely and monitor their patients at home.

Legislation enabling telehealth practice is strongly supported by AARP Michigan because telehealth has the potential to reduce health care costs, expand access to care and improve patient health.

Adoption of Senate Bill 753 also puts protections in place for the safety and privacy of patients.

AARP Michigan will support additional new telehealth laws in 2017 that can allow older adults and their family caregivers new opportunities to manage their health and increase access to health professionals.
