Eighty years ago, the world witnessed the end of one of the most devastating conflicts in human history - World War II. The Greatest Generation, those who fought in or supported the American and Allied forces during WWII, embodied a spirit of unity, perseverance and selflessness.
On both the front lines and the home front, the contributions of the Greatest Generation during the war were monumental despite unimaginable hardship, which they met with unwavering resolve and a strong belief in freedom and justice.
Since the war's end in 1945, the world has seen remarkable progress: Technological innovation, globalization and the expansion of democracy. Much of this advancement was built on the foundation of the Greatest Generation, and their legacy continues to shape our lives and values today.
To mark this milestone, Grand Rapids, the hometown of President Gerald R. Ford, is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the war with a week-long tribute from September 2-7, 2025 to the heroes of the Greatest Generation.
Hosted by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, events include a parade featuring WWII-era vehicles, a dramatic Wings of Honor flyover, film screenings, lectures from renowned historians and more.
