Age of Champions a winner with Lincoln audience

On May 14, about 200 people filled Lincoln’s Edgewood Cinema for a special screening of the award-winning PBS documentary Age of Champions. It was a hit with the audience!

The film portrays a group of athletes chasing gold at the National Senior Games, ranging in age from 60-something to 100. These are people taking on life’s many challenges, not just age. Their stories offer encouragement to all of us about our ability to triumph over the perceived limitations of age.

Joining us at the event was Age of Champions co-producer Tad Ochwat, who discussed his experiences with the project and shared insights and updates on the athletes featured in the film.

Dorothy Ekblad, a retired nurse and an active athlete, was our special guest “champion” at the screening. Now 87, she began competing in the State Senior Games in the early 90s, and in 1992 she competed nationally for the first time. She has since competed coast-to-coast from San Francisco, California to Orlando, Florida, in the discus, shot put, javelin and 100, 200, and 400 meter runs. In 2011 at the Houston games, Dorothy earned both Silver and Bronze medals. She hopes to compete in the senior games again this year!
