On Thursday, August 14, 2025, AARP will light up Omaha’s Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in AARP red as part of the Skyline Salute—a nationwide tribute marking the 90th anniversary of Social Security.
For nine decades, Social Security has served as a cornerstone of financial security for millions of Americans, delivering earned benefits reliably and on time. Today, more than 370,000 Nebraskans—nearly one in five residents—receive Social Security benefits, helping older adults avoid poverty and live with dignity after a lifetime of hard work. These benefits inject an estimated $7.7 billion into Nebraska’s economy each year.
“Social Security is a promise kept—and we’re proud to light up our Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in recognition of its legacy and importance,” said Todd Stubbendieck, State Director of AARP Nebraska. “It has helped hundreds of thousands of Nebraskans stay out of poverty and afford the basics. It’s a legacy worth celebrating and protecting.”
The Skyline Salute is part of AARP’s national campaign to commemorate the signing of Social Security into law in 1935. Red and white lights will illuminate landmarks across the country, symbolizing decades of trust, reliability, and bipartisan support.
The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, located at 705 Riverfront Drive in Omaha, Nebraska, will light up in red at sundown on August 14—approximately 8:23 p.m.—as part of the Skyline Salute to Social Security. This iconic bridge connects Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, with open parking available near both entrances.
AARP is urging elected leaders to protect and strengthen Social Security for current and future generations because Americans have earned it through a lifetime of hard work. To learn more, visit https://www.aarp.org/NebraskaPledge.
