February 12 program eyes fraud, elder financial abuse

Join us for dinner and a discussion about fraud and elder financial abuse in Columbus on Thursday, February 12. AARP Nebraska and Columbus Public Library are hosting a special program with the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office and the Columbus Police Department to share information with you and your family about preventing fraud.

The free event is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Columbus Public Library auditorium, 2504 14 ^th St. A light dinner will be provided at no charge. Register by Feb. 5 by calling the library at (402) 564-7116.

Ryan Sothan, outreach coordinator for the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, will present “Preventing Fraud: Nebraska’s Senior Anti-Fraud Education Program.” Local law enforcement will also discuss current scams and fraud targeting  area residents.

“Attendees will learn to recognize the common warning signs associated with scams, what they should do if they or someone they know is a target of fraud and the measures they can take to substantially reduce the likelihood of being victimized by fraud,” Sothan said. “Education is the best weapon we have to fight consumer fraud and elder abuse.”
