The Aging Nebraskans Task Force invites the public to attend upcoming town hall meetings on Alzheimer’s Disease in Kearney on Aug. 27, Omaha on Sept. 15 and Alliance on Sept. 29.
Participants at the events will discuss the development and implementation of a Nebraska Alzheimer’s Disease Plan. Family caregivers and people living with Alzheimer’s are encouraged to attend and add their voice to the discussion.
The plan will assess the current impact of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in our state and outline what steps must be taken over the next five to 10 years to improve services and support for people with the disease and their families.
Alzheimer’s Disease is a pivotal public health issue. According to the Alzheimer's Association 2015 Alzheimer's Disease Facts & Figures report, there are 37,000 people living with Alzheimer’s and 81,000 Alzheimer’s caregivers in Nebraska.
The number of people with the disease is expected to jump by more than 20 percent in the next ten years as the population ages and the oldest boomers turn 80.
The statewide Aging Nebraskans Task Force is charged with creating the plan. The plan will be presented to Gov. Ricketts and the Legislature by December 15, 2016. AARP Nebraska’s Advocacy Director Mark Intermill serves on the task force.
