As data breach incidents proliferate, a new AARP survey finds that an alarming number of Nebraska residents have failed to take basic precautions against identity fraud. In response, AARP Nebraska and the AARP Fraud Watch Network have launched a campaign to raise awareness of identity theft risks and educate consumers on how to enhance the safety of their personal information.

AARP scored several important wins for 50-plus Nebraskans in the fiscally challenging 2018 legislative session. Listed below are the top priority bills that we supported and actively worked to pass on behalf of our members, their families and caregivers.

Nearly 8,800 Nebraskans filed reports of fraud, identity theft and other complaints to the Federal Trade Commission in 2017. AARP Nebraska is teaming up with the Better Business Bureau to help shrink that number by sponsoring Secure Your ID Day on Saturday, April 21.

AARP Nebraska and Better Business Bureau (BBB) Foundation will host a special program featuring identity theft and consumer fraud expert Eva Velasquez in Grand Island and Lincoln April 10 and in Ralston April 11.

If you were tricked into wiring money to scammers using Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017, you may be eligible to get at least some of your money back. The Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice came to a $586 million settlement with Western Union last year. Visit www.ftc.gov/wu to learn more. You can file your petition online or by mail, but do so by Feb. 12, 2018.

In the wake of the Equifax data breach, volunteers trained to help consumers avoid scams are prepared to speak to community groups in Nebraska.

AARP Nebraska is joining forces with the AARP Fraud Watch Network and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for Operation Protect Veterans -- a campaign to warn those who have served in the military about scams and fraud schemes that target veterans. The major educational campaign will reach out to veterans in communities across Nebraska and nationwide.

Back by popular demand for the 12th year, AARP Nebraska and Shred-It will host a free community shredding day in Omaha on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 at The Center Mall on 42nd and Center Sts.
