Old East End of Burlington Shares Walkability Suggestions

Neighbors in Burlington’s Old East End have completed a reassessment of walkability conditions. During July and August of 2023, volunteers used AARP Walk Audit tools in 22 separate observations requiring over 55 hours of volunteer time.

The full findings are provided in Old East End: Walkability Assessment; Report of Observations and Findings.

The community has selected a set of top priority recommendations that will be feasible for volunteers to implement with grant funding from the AARP Community Challenge Grant in 2023. The top priorities include: crosswalk and intersection painting, traffic calming measures, pedestrian protection delineators, and neighborhood appeal measures, such as banners and a community kiosk. The priorities are summarized in Old East End: Top Priority Walkability Recommendations.

Currently, the community is coordinating with Burlington’s Department of Public Works to implement improvements this Fall to make their community more walkable and age-friendly.
