Make Your Own Emergency Disaster Kit

DisasterKit
Be prepared - make a disaster kit!

Disasters disrupt thousands of lives every year and have lasting effects both to people and property. When disaster strikes, relief organizations will try to help but may not be able to reach you immediately, so we need to be ready ourselves.

September is National Disaster Preparedness Month and it’s our opportunity to get disaster prepared.

This month we hope you will set time aside to create an emergency communications plan to establish how you find and communicate with loved ones during a disaster. We're also encouraging everyone to assemble an emergency supply kit.

The basic kit should include: a first aid kit, flashlight, whistle, garbage bags, moist towellettes, non-perishable foods, a can opener, water (one gallon per person, per day), and a battery operated or hand crank radio. Make copies of insurance, titles, bank accounts, and medical providers, and be sure to store it all in a water and fireproof box or offsite.

By being prepared, you’ll benefit from valuable peace of mind and reduce the loss that accompanies disasters. To learn more and get involved visit ReadyWisconsin.
