Help Children Become Better Readers

You’ll enjoy putting your experience to use by tutoring and mentoring young people through AARP Foundation Experience Corps. Students, schools and volunteers, like you, all benefit from this innovative intergenerational program.

As a volunteer, you can:

Tutor & Mentor: Enjoy working with elementary school-age students virtually in classrooms and after-school sites.

Train & Equip: Get all the training and tools you need to guide the next generation of readers.

Join a Community: Become part of the local Experience Corps community, a group of dedicated volunteers.

Have Fun & Make Friends: Enjoy yourself and feel good knowing you can make a lasting impact in a child’s life.


Volunteer Roles

Reading Tutor

You will have the opportunity to work with kindergarten through third-grade students to strengthen literacy skills and change the course of a child's life by sharing your wisdom and experience. This is a rewarding role that is ideal for people who enjoy teaching and interacting with children. Make a lasting difference in the life of a child.

Requirements:

  • Must be age 50 or older
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED (minimum)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Pass a basic literacy screening
  • Must attend 25 hours of provided training (annually)

Time/Frequency:

  • 4 - 6 hours per week

Team Leader

Be a vital link in supporting an intergenerational tutoring program that helps children improve their reading skills. You will be responsible for coordinating ongoing communication, planning, and documentation of Experience Corps program with school and afterschool sites and serving as the liaison between volunteers and program partner points of contact.

Requirements:

  • Must be age 50 or older
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED (minimum)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Pass a basic literacy screening
  • Must attend 25 hours of provided training (annually)

Time/Frequency:

  • 4 - 6 hours per week
