AARP Delaware Welcomes George Meldrum as New State President

George Meldrum of Wilmington has been appointed as the new state president of AARP Delaware. AARP has more than 185,000 members in the state and is instrumental in improving the lives of older adults through information, advocacy, community service, local offerings and events.

Mr. Meldrum brings a wealth of experience in both the healthcare and non-profit fields with executive and leadership roles into this top volunteer position with AARP in Delaware.

Mr. Meldrum has an extensive background in advocacy, administration and health policy development. He currently serves as a Lobbyist at Nemours Foundation. He also has held leadership roles at the Delaware Council on Gambling, the Department of Services for Children Youth and their Families, and the Delaware Division of Mental Health. Earlier in his career, he was a Social Worker for Delaware Child Protective Services. He has also served on numerous high-level committees such as the Governor’s Advisory Council on Substance Abuse and Mental Health.

AARP Delaware State Director Lucretia Young explains, “As a proven leader on healthcare issues in Delaware, George brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. He knows Delaware and the many ways it has changed over the years. Delawareans look to AARP as a leader on issues that matter most to them, and George is the perfect person to represent us in that capacity.”

A World-Class Advocate

As a member of AARP’s Executive Council for ten years, George has been instrumental in establishing relationships with policymakers who matter most in the lives of Delawareans age 50+ and their families. Throughout his tenure with AARP, he has testified on issues such as the state budget; launched policy teams; and collaborated with top agencies statewide.

Mr. Meldrum’s skills and talents will be key as the state office continues its advocacy work on the Caregiving issue. In 2016, AARP Delaware passed the CARE Act with a statewide coalition of partners. In 2018, AARP will work on nurse delegation issues as a way to improve the lives of family caregivers.

“Someone with George’s experience and ability to reach various communities, committees and governmental officials will be pivotal to our work,” noted Young.

Mr. Meldrum succeeds Rashmi Rangan, who successfully served at State President for AARP Delaware since 2015.

George Meldrum holds a BA in International Relations from University of Delaware and an MA in Psychology from Washington College. He is the father of two sons and enjoys traveling to the Caribbean.
