AARP Eye Center
As part of our work in Livable Communities, AARP Delaware was the presenting Sponsor for the 2020 Designing Intersection for People in Delaware virtual conference. Organized by our community partner Bike Delaware, the conference had a diverse international panel that included issues experts and engineers from across the country and the Netherlands. It also served as platform for discussion of challenges for eight specific intersections across the State of Delaware that can be made a bit more safe for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. AARP Delaware State President George Meldrum provided welcoming remarks, expressing AARP’s support for better transportation options for Delawareans, especially those age 50+.
As he opened up the conference, George shared that men outlive their driving years by about six years. For women, who typically live longer, that number goes up to ten years. That’s why AARP believes it is so important to keep our streets and intersections walkable and safe. AARP fully supports Bike Delware’s efforts to make our streets and intersections friendly for walkers, drivers, and cyclists. This will offer more choices for people as they age in the First State, and give them more opportunity to remain in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.
