Document-Shredding Events and Information Will Help Delawareans Avoid Fraud

The AARP Fraud Watch Network brings fraud-fighting efforts to consumers nationwide in “ Operation: Stop Scams” -- a month-long series of events in communities coast-to-coast. Here in Delaware, AARP is collaborating with the YMCA of Delaware to host events in Newark and Rehoboth. The events will include free shredding services, information on fraud and scams, refreshments, prizes and fun. The events are free and open to the public.

“Many Delawareans clear out and discard their obsolete financial documents at the end of the tax-filing season in April.  Our shredding events provide a convenient and safe way for people to destroy this sensitive paperwork,” said Rashmi Rangan, AARP State President.  “April also brings the personal finance awareness activities of Money Smart Week, so we’re excited to do our part with events to teach consumers to be smart about avoiding fraud and scams.”

Rangan also noted that according to the Federal Trade Commission, Delaware ranks 8 th out of all 52 states for complaints of fraudulent activity.

Money Smart Week , April 22-29, is a collaborative between thousands of organizations across the United States that offer financial education programs, classes and activities. AARP’s events in Delaware will offer an opportunity for free shredding to help protect consumers and their families from many types of fraud such as identity theft, IRS scams, home improvement scams and more.
