Free Workshop Looks at Making Your Home Fit for Life

Homeowners and caregivers looking to improve their homes so they or loved ones can continue living there regardless of their age or physical ability should attend a free AARP Hawai‘i Homefit Workshop on April 30th at Catholic Charities Hawai‘i on Ke`eaumoku Street.

An AARP survey of older Oahu residents found nearly 80 percent want to remain in their own homes as they age.  Many home and apartment owners 45 years old and older said they will have to remodel their homes to allow them to continue living there, with bathrooms (41 percent) being the most common home modification.

Experts in home modifications will explain a range of modifications, from simple, inexpensive fixes, such as changing light fixtures and cabinet handles to budgeting and planning for a major remodeling project. You’ll also learn about new technologies that are making it easier to age in place.

The free Homefit Workshop runs from 2 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Catholic Charities Hawai‘i Clarence T. Ching Center at 1882 Ke’eaumoku Street. You don’t have to be an AARP member to attend, but you should register by calling 1-877-926-8300 or going to events.aarp.org/home4-30. You can also visit the AARP Hawai’i website at aarp.org/hi or the AARP Hawai'i Facebook page and click on the Upcoming Events tab to see and register for all the events AARP offers.
