Save Lives; Look and Say Mahalo Before Crossing the Street

Make eye contact with a driver or pedestrian and say mahalo before crossing the street.

That’s the message that AARP Hawai‘i, Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, Walk Wise Hawaii and other senior organizations and facilities will be sharing during a pedestrian safety sign waving event on May 2 at locations across Honolulu.

“Pedestrians and drivers must be aware of each other when approaching intersections and crossing the street,” said Suzanne Chun Oakland, program coordinator at the Lanakila Senior Center operated by Catholic Charities Hawai‘i. “In Hawai‘i, we say thank you a lot. So it should be a normal occurrence for pedestrians to look at drivers and wave or say mahalo before crossing the street and for drivers to acknowledge pedestrians. If everybody did that, we would save lives.”

“Hawai‘i has the nation’s highest per-capita death rate for pedestrians 65 and older. We have to change that,” said Barbara Kim Stanton, AARP Hawai‘i state director. “Pedestrians and drivers have to look out for each other.”
