Vision Zero Project Aims to Make Oahu’s Streets Safer

Honolulu’s Vision Zero Project is creating an action plan that aims to end traffic deaths on Oahu’s streets and wants to hear from you.

The Vision Zero project will be proposing actions including designing safer streets and intersections, changes to policies and traffic laws, and testing new roadway safety measures and is seeking public input to gauge support for some of the changes.

On average one person dies in a traffic crash on Oahu streets every week. Most crashes involve just motor vehicles, but people walking, in wheelchairs or biking are much more likely to be injured or killed in crashes. People walking are six percent of commuters, but are involved in 15 percent of all injury crashes and make up 36 percent of Oahu’s traffic fatalities.

Kupuna make up only 17 percent of Oahu’s population but are 41 percent of the people killed in crashes while walking and 24 percent of those killed in crashes involving bicycles.

In addition, speed is a factor in about a third of the fatal crashes on Oahu and 16 percent of serious injury crashes.
