SB 454, which faced strong opposition from AARP Louisiana, has been defeated in the legislature. The proposed bill aimed to protect Louisiana's nursing home management companies from numerous lawsuits concerning staffing, inadequate patient care, and other grievances, but it will not progress further in the state Legislature.
"SB 454 would have provided nursing homes with an undue shield from accountability and responsibility, particularly evident during states of emergency or evacuation. This comes at a time when Louisiana continues to grapple with the devastating aftermath of the tragic nursing home fatalities resulting from Hurricane Ida in 2021," said Andrew Muhl, AARP Louisiana advocacy director.
“AARP continues to urge authorities and legislators to enact measures that ensure justice and safety for the families impacted by this recent negligence and failure in nursing home care.”
