AARP Louisiana is proud to recognize Representative Mark Wright as the 2025 Fraud Fighter of the Year for his leadership and commitment to protecting Louisiana consumers from scams and fraud—especially in the fast-growing world of cryptocurrency.
Earlier this year, Representative Wright sponsored House Bill 483, which passed during the 2024 legislative session. The new law creates strong consumer protections at virtual currency kiosks, where scammers often pressure victims—especially older adults—to convert cash into cryptocurrency as part of elaborate fraud schemes.
“Older adults are disproportionately affected by theft losses at crypto kiosks, and strong protections are urgently needed,” said Denise Bottcher, State Director of AARP Louisiana. “Representative Wright’s leadership ensures that Louisiana residents—particularly older consumers—are better protected from these fast-growing scams.”
The numbers tell the story. In 2024, Louisiana victims reported more than $36 million stolen through cryptocurrency fraud, according to the FBI. Nationwide, crypto ATM scam complaints surged 99 percent over the previous year, with older adults losing more than $107 million.
Thanks to Representative Wright’s work, Louisiana now has new measures in place to safeguard consumers by increasing transparency, fairness, and accountability in virtual currency transactions.
AARP Louisiana applauds Representative Wright for his commitment to helping reduce fraud losses and making Louisiana a safer place for consumers of all ages. His work embodies the spirit of the AARP Fraud Fighter of the Year Award, which honors leaders who go above and beyond to protect older adults from scams and financial exploitation.
Representative Wright will be honored at a celebration on November 4.
