AARP Hearing Center
AARP Massachusetts is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant program! This annual initiative helps make communities across the Bay State more livable for people of all ages, with a special focus on those 50 and older. If you’re part of a nonprofit or a local government, this is your chance to bring positive change to your neighborhood.
What Is the Community Challenge?
The AARP Community Challenge provides quick-action grants to fund projects that make communities better places to live. Whether it’s improving public spaces, making transportation safer, boosting digital connections, or supporting housing and disaster resilience, these grants help turn great ideas into reality—fast.
This year marks the program’s tenth anniversary, and AARP is doubling its investment—over $8 million will be awarded nationwide! That means more support for cities, towns, and rural areas, especially for projects that benefit residents age 50 and older.
Three Ways to Make a Difference:
- Flagship Grants: For projects that improve public places, transportation, housing, digital connections, and disaster resilience. Awards range from a few hundred dollars up to $15,000.
- Capacity-Building Microgrants: These come with expert support and training for projects like walkability, bikeability, home modifications, and disaster preparedness. Each award is $2,500.
- Demonstration Grants: Designed to showcase and replicate outstanding local efforts, with a focus this year on pedestrian safety, expanding high-speed internet, and housing design competitions. Awards typically range from $10,000 to $25,000.
Why Apply?
Since 2017, AARP has invested $24.3 million in over 2,100 projects nationwide—including 57 right here in Massachusetts. These grants have helped communities of all sizes become more welcoming and accessible for everyone.
