Join AARP Massachusetts for an exciting evening of fun, facts, and fraud-fighting at our Fraud Busters & Brewmasters event at Seven Saws Brewery in Holden. This private gathering will be a fun night with trivia, live music, and plenty of free giveaways. Each attendee will receive two complimentary drinks, and there will be a delicious BBQ food truck on site with food available for purchase. You can RSVP for yourself and up to five guests—because great company makes everything better!
At AARP Massachusetts, we believe that knowledge is power—especially when it comes to protecting yourself from scams. That’s why we’re combining entertainment with education. Throughout the evening, you’ll have the chance to test your fraud trivia knowledge, enjoy live music, and learn valuable tips to stay safe—all while having a great time. Trivia teams will be made up of four people, and if you don’t have a full team, don’t worry—we’ll happily match you with others.
This event also highlights a serious and growing issue: cryptocurrency kiosk fraud. These unregulated ATMs, often found in gas stations, bars, and convenience stores, are being used by scammers to steal millions from unsuspecting victims. In 2023 alone, the FBI received over 5,500 complaints related to this type of fraud, with reported losses totaling $189 million. With more than 45,000 crypto ATMs now operating across the country, the threat is real and growing.
That’s why AARP Massachusetts is backing a critical piece of legislation: An Act Relative to Preventing Fraud and Establishing Regulations on Certain Virtual Currencies (H.1247/S.707). Sponsored by Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian, Representative Tom Stanley, and Senator John Cronin, this bill aims to strengthen consumer protections in Massachusetts—already among the strongest in the nation. The proposed measures include licensing cryptocurrency ATM operators, setting daily transaction limits, requiring visible fraud warnings, and creating a special commission to study blockchain technology. It also emphasizes the importance of financial education to help residents safeguard their savings and make informed decisions.
