Sandra Harris Honored with 2024 AARP Massachusetts Andrus Award for Community Service

The 2024 AARP Massachusetts Andrus Award for Community Service was presented to Sandra Harris at a heartwarming celebration in Boston's South End Friday November 1. Named after AARP’s founder Ethel Percy Andrus, the award honors 50-plus volunteers who have made exceptional contributions to their communities. Harris has served as the volunteer State President of AARP Massachusetts since 2019. She was recognized for her tireless efforts to improve the lives of older adults across the state.

Acting Massachusetts Secretary of Elder Affairs Robin Lipson praised Harris for her dedication and authenticity. “Sandra walks the talk,” Lipson remarked, adding with a smile, “and she occasionally offers her fashion advice too.”

Former AARP Massachusetts State Director Mike Festa also attended, reflecting on the hard work he and Harris had done together. “Sandra often worked harder than I did,” Festa admitted, highlighting her relentless commitment.

Current State Director Jen Benson served as host for the event, commending Harris for her leadership and dedication to AARP’s priorities. “Sandra has been a friend, mentor, and an amazing leader who inspires others to contribute their skills, talents, and commitment to fulfilling the mission of AARP,” Benson said.

In her acceptance speech, Harris emphasized the collective effort behind her achievements. “Together, we’ve proven that it takes a village and that when determination, hearts, and communities unite, the village works!”

Harris’s work has focused on critical issues faced by older adults, including loneliness and social isolation. “While I am deeply honored today, I know the work is far from over,” she said. “I ask each of you to continue fighting against loneliness and social isolation and ensure that every older adult has the resources they need to live a long and healthy life. This isn’t just about one cause; it’s about creating a society where everyone, regardless of their age, creed, color, or language of their mother’s tongue, feels valued, secure, and connected.”

“Working alongside such a talented and passionate team has been a privilege,” Harris said. “Our efforts have centered on ensuring that no older adult has to choose between paying for medication or putting food on the table. Among many other things, we’ve advocated for stronger protection in retirement benefits and supported programs that keep healthcare affordable and accessible—because living long and living well should go hand in hand.”

Harris’s tenure as State President will conclude in January. She will remain as the co-lead for the Massachusetts Coalition to Build Community & End Loneliness.
