But what exactly makes a community “livable?”
We think that a livable community is safe and secure, has appropriate and affordable housing and transportation options, and includes needed services (such as health care) and desirable features (such as shopping, gathering places and outdoor spaces). Such a community enhances personal independence and engages people of all ages in civic, economic and social life.
A livable community is designed with all residents in mind, from the very young to older adults who want to remain in the community they call home. The programs, policies and physical features that enhance a community’s livability include those that feature housing options, provide ways to get around, are safe and healthy, and encourage engagement and opportunities.
“We would love to have you help us work with local leaders to make our community an even better place to live, work and play.” – Mike Festa, AARP Massachusetts State Director.
We encourage those who would like to learn more about how AARP is helping work towards a more livable Commonwealth to tell us in the comment section below what YOU think would make this a more livable community for people of all ages.
