'Daddy's Boys' performances coming June 30 to Detroit

“Daddy’s Boys” -- a free, AARP-sponsored theatrical performance centered on men’s health and financial security -- is coming June 30 to the Detroit Institute of Arts-Film Theater, 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit.

GDavis Productions has created a thought-provoking stage play that depicts the struggle of black men as fathers, as businessmen, and as ordinary men facing health challenges from the vantage point of three generations.

Playwright Garrett Davis, who also created award-winning plays “Mama’s Girls” and “Forget Me Not,” continues to create productions addressing the way we view minority health issues, such as caregiving, Alzheimer’s and diabetes. “Daddy’s Boys” demonstrates the importance of the role black men play in the community of color. This moving production will educate and inform audiences of all ages.

The play, hosted by partners AARP Michigan, the Detroit Institute of Arts-Film Theater and the Charles Wright Museum of African American History, will be performed at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on June 30. Doors open 30 minutes prior to start time. There will be open seating. The production will be 90 minutes with one intermission.

AARP resource stations will be on site and open one hour prior to each performance. A lighted, secured parking lot east of the DIA on John R Ave. Parking rate is $7.

Between the 1 pm and 6 pm performance there will be a 3:30 p.m. seminar that explores men’s health in partnership with the Prostate Health Foundation, Karmanos Cancer and DMC-Sinai Grace Hospital.
