AARP Michigan will offer a four-part Caregiving Resource Workshop over the next four months in Detroit.
The free series will include nutrition and exercise demonstrations; interactive presentations on how to manage your money, relieve stress and protect your health as a caregiver; information on local resources available to support caregivers; and opportunities for positive and supportive social interaction with other caregivers.
“Caregivers are a silent army that performs a great labor of love. But they need information, emotional support and help,” said Lisa Whitmore Davis, AARP Michigan Associate State Director of Community Outreach, who is coordinating the workshops.
The workshop dates are Friday, April 17, 3 to 5 p.m.; Saturday, May 30, 10 a.m. to 12 noon; Saturday, June 27, 10 a.m. to 12 noon; and Friday, July 10, 3 to 5 p.m. at the Michigan State University Detroit Center, 3408 Woodward Avenue, Detroit. There will be free parking behind the building.
Michigan has about 2 million residents, including many thousands in Metro Detroit, providing 1.4 billion hours of free care to loved ones valued at $15.5 billion a year.
A 2014 AARP survey of likely Michigan voters age 50 and older indicated 78 percent are, have been or expect to be caregivers. The poll also showed that four in five older adults prefer at-home care over other options for themselves and their families.
Those interested in the workshop series must register at 1-877-926-8300.
